'The Vagina Monologues' by American playwright Eve Ensler has been a theatrical phenomenon for the last ten years. Every year there are hundreds of productions around the world which take place during the January - March period as part of a global campaign aimed at ending violence and abuse against women and girls. It is called the 'V - Day Campaign' and over the last decade it has raised many millions of pounds for charities which help women fleeing domestic abuse, support rape victims, or offer crisis counselling and other such services to women.
The script is based on interviews with many women of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds which the author Eve Ensler conducted over the course of many years. These women talked frankly to her about their experiences of love, sex, childbirth and abuse, about being mothers and daughters, about being victims of sexual violence. Eve Ensler condensed the many weeks of interviews down into a riveting, exhilarating, passionate and hilarious piece of theatre about what it is to be a woman.
All proceeds from this production went towards the following Bristol charities -
Bristol Crisis Service for Women
NOVAS project for women seeking refuge from domestic violence
Avon Sexual Abuse Centre
Womankind - Bristol Women's Therapy Centre
This production set a new Box Office record for Stepping Out Theatre by selling out the QEH Theatre (220 people) and helped us to raise a considerable sum for our four nominated charities.
2009 Production
This production was revived in 2009 again raising money for local Bristol charities.
Although performed at a smaller venue than the 2008 productions, it's three productions were completely sold out. A special performance for women staff and patients at Fromeside Hospital was performed on February 28th 2009.
Proceeds from the 2009 production went to -
Bristol Crisis Service for Women
Next Link Housing and Domestic Abuse Service
Avon Sexual Abuse Centre
Womankind - Bristol Women's Therapy Centre
